Canberra, ACT, Australia Department of Defence Full time $120,000 - $180,000 per year

The Role

The Senior Navy Psychologist in Canberra is responsible for delivering a range of psychological services to Navy personnel across the region. This is a civilian role, as part of the APS workforce within Navy. The Navy Psychology Section provides psychological support to the RAN uniformed workforce and contributes directly to Navy's capability and national security. Navy Psychology strengthens the Navy workforce by delivering best-practice resilience, organisational and mental health programs and by working with Navy leadership to optimise members' performance.

The services delivered by a Navy Psychology Section include providing stakeholder advice and liaison, referrals from Command for advice, brief self-referrals from Navy members for work-related support, mental health training development and delivery, operational mental health screening, critical incident mental health support and organisational interventions.

The role includes access to free parking, gym facilities, ongoing professional development, and reimbursement for AHPRA registration.

Non-ongoing position from October February 2027.

About our Team

The Navy Psychology Canberra team provides psychological services to Navy members across the entire Canberra region. The team work together to support each other, the goals of the Section, and wider Navy. They value professional development, strong relationships, high performance and work flexibility.

Navy Psychologists work across the country in a number of bases and Defence establishments. The network of Navy Psychology provides access to a wide range of experience and psychological expertise. We value relationship building between Sections, and encourage our psychologists to broaden their professional network and share their unique skills.

Our Ideal Candidate

A Senior Psychologist will exercise a considerable degree of independence and perform a leadership role. They will exercise sound decision-making and judgement to provide expert policy advice. A solution-focused, dynamic, and supportive Senior Psychologist, who can work well within a small team, would be ideal for the role.

The role includes a mix of organisational and clinical skills, and suits an experienced psychologist who values variety, professional growth and reflective practice.

Experience in managing small teams, or the potential ability, with the willingness to upskill in this area is preferred. Ability to anticipate challenges, identify innovative solutions, and act decisively is essential. While this is a client-facing role, there will be regular opportunities to work from home and enjoy flexible work arrangements. There is also free access to the gym facilities on base and free on-site parking.

Application Closing Date: Monday 19 October 2025
