**The Role**
The EL1 Governance Officer contributes to the purpose of Navy Safety and Environment (NavySafE) by providing leadership in strategic and operational governance to ensure accountability, transparency and effective collaboration for the organisation. This is achieved through the development and implementation of better practice governance policies, processes and procedures and providing strategic advice and support to senior level committees including the Navy Safety and Environment Board. This role will also assist in the development of rigorous and relevant performance measures and information.

Working with the Regulator Relations area, the EL1 Governance Officer will provide support to Navy in meeting legislative requirements of the WHS Act 2011 (Cth). In particular ensuring that notifiable WHS events to the regulator are actioned in accordance with the statutory time-frames as mandated within the WHS ACT and Defence policy. This position ensures that communication protocols between the regulator and Defence (Navy) are met in the conduct of monitoring compliance and assurance activities. All interactions are managed and coordinated to ensure timely responses and that recommendations made are tracked at the strategic level, recognising lessons learnt across the broader Navy and discussed within the relevant safety boards.

**About our Team**
The Navy Safety and Environment (NavySafE) team is part of the Navy Engineering Division and works across a range of specialisations including work health and safety, occupational hygiene, and environment. NavySafE is accountable for developing and sustaining Navy's Safety and Environment Management Systems, and assuring Navy senior leadership that these systems are effectively implemented and maintained.
- Demonstrated policy, governance and secretariat skills and experience engaging with internal and external stakeholders on complex policy and legal issues.
- An understanding of the strategic objectives of the organisation and develop work plans regarding ongoing review and development of safety policy.
- Ability to contribute their own expertise for the benefit of the business unit and encourage others in the team to draw upon this knowledge.
- Demonstrated ability to achieve results, with experience planning and managing multiple complex tasks and competing priorities to achieve timely outcomes.
- Ability to build and sustain relationships with a network of key people, both within and external to Defence, to proactively deliver outcomes at the enterprise level.
- Excellent communication skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate with influence on matters complex in nature.
