ABOUT GBK
Gur A Baradharaw Kod Sea and Land Council Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal Corporation (GBK) is a community-owned, not-for-profit organisation that holds the important role as the peak body of all Registered Native Title Bodies Corporate (PBCs) in the Torres and Endeavour Straits. Our work focuses on developing sustainable partnerships with native title holders and stakeholders to achieve economic, social and cultural development.
GBK plays a pivotal leadership role in coordinating regional efforts to build climate resilience across the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area. Our efforts are focused on empowering Traditional Owners to plan and lead climate adaptation actions grounded in cultural knowledge and Ailan Kastom.
ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a passionate and capable Climate Resilience Officer to support the delivery of GBK's Climate Resilience Project — a multi-year, First Nations-led initiative supporting local climate leadership and adaptation across our region.
The Climate Resilience Project is funded through the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area Climate Resilience Grant Program and centres on Traditional Owner-led planning and place-based solutions. It supports the development of Local Climate Adaptation Plans that reflect seasonal knowledge, community priorities, and intergenerational cultural values — ensuring our climate future is guided by Ailan Kastom and self-determined decision-making.
Working under the direction of the Project Manager, this role will coordinate activities with Traditional Owner groups, help develop Local Climate Adaptation Plans, and ensure the project is implemented in accordance with GBK's governance frameworks, cultural protocols, and grant conditions.
You'll assist with community engagement, workshop logistics, data collection, and reporting. The role is highly mobile and requires regular travel throughout the Torres Strait.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the design and delivery of Local Climate Adaptation Plans
- Coordinate and facilitate culturally respectful engagement with Traditional Owners, Elders, and PBCs
- Organise community workshops, travel, and logistics
- Collect data and support reporting in line with GBK's MERI Framework and ICIP protocols
- Contribute to governance-strengthening, intergenerational learning, and education activities
- Maintain strong collaborative relationships with internal teams and external partners
The Ideal Candidate will have
- Experience supporting project delivery in environmental, community, or First Nations contexts
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills, including with Elders and cultural leaders
- Strong organisational and administrative capability
- Cultural awareness and a commitment to First Nations leadership and knowledge
- Computer literacy and ability to manage data, documents and logistics
- Knowledge of Torres Strait culture, governance, and geography
- Qualifications in environmental science, climate adaptation or community development
- Experience in culturally responsive stakeholder engagement
Please note: the willingness to travel to remote First Nations communities in light aircraft is an essential requirement of this position.
All GBK positions require mandatory pre-employment screening for successful applicants, including a National Police Check and, where applicable, a National Qualifications Check to verify qualifications and certifications listed on the CV.
We strongly encourage Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander persons to apply for this role.
Benefits include:
- Competitive remuneration and generous salary packaging (PBI)
- Relocation assistance negotiable
- Flexible working arrangements including working from home or based in our offices in Cairns and Thursday Island
- Advancement opportunities in a small but growing organisation
- Working for a highly-regarded employer and respected community-led organisation
- Hit that pink "Quick Apply"button
- Upload a PDF of your current resume and a short letter about you and why you'd be perfect for this position.
We are looking forward to meeting you
