The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.

The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.

**Overview of the Branch and Section**:
The Media and Communication Branch is responsible for centrally coordinating media enquiries and strategic communications for the Department and Australian Border Force (ABF). The Branch is supported by several Sections that each deliver important influence and enabling services for Portfolio Ministerial offices, senior public servants and departmental business areas.

You will be joining one of the most diverse communication teams in Federal Government.

**Your placement could be in any of the following Sections**:

- Media Operations Section _- responsible for managing media engagement for the Department and developing media materials, including media responses, media releases, talking points, op-eds and media handling strategies to support key Portfolio and Government initiatives. This Section is responsible for the media and communication management of the Department’s corporate functions, regional processing, health services policy, international policy and external scrutiny, including freedom of information.
- Strategic Communication Section_ - leads and supports the development, implementation and evaluation of various communication strategies and activities including communication and media management for Australia Day, Harmony Week, Australian Citizenship Day and Refugee Week. This Section also provides speechwriting services for the Portfolio Ministers and Secretary.
- National Security and Crisis Communication Section_ - coordinates strategic communication and media engagement pertaining to counter-terrorism, countering foreign interference, cyber security, critical infrastructure security, emergency management and special events. This Section also leads whole-of-Government public information coordination for crises that fall under the responsibility of Home Affairs portfolio Ministers. In addition, this Section performs secretariat functions for the Australia New Zealand Counter-Terrorism Committee's Public Information Sub-Committee.
- ABF Media and Communication Section_ - promotes and protects the brand and reputation of the ABF through proactive media engagement, media response and handling, and strategic communication advice. This section builds and maintains awareness of the ABF’s role and highlight the positive work and operational successes of the ABF.
- Internal Communications Section_ - delivers internal communication advice, programs and solutions for the Department and ABF, including management of internal communication campaigns and internal communication channels.
- Campaigns Section_ - provides specialist advice and support to facilitate the delivery of evidence-based policy, program and communications outcomes. This Section leads the design and delivery of market research programs and support the development of Australian Government advertising campaigns, including procurement, contract and supplier management, and navigating the campaign approval process.
- Communication Governance Section_ - provides corporate support to the Media and Communication Branch, and Assistant Secretary. This section works closely with the teams in the Branch and the Assistant Secretary’s office to monitor and address risks in our operating environment, as well as respond to requests from the Minister and Secretary’s offices on sensitive and complex media and communication-related matters.
- Production and Design Section_ - manages an in-house end-to-end video production, multimedia and graphic design capability with industry trained professionals in videography, photography and graphic design. This Section provides advice and support to promote and maintain brand consistency across a diverse range of internal and external products for the Department and the
