**The Role**
Within the Animal Attendants and Trainers function an APS 4 Dog Handler - Team Leader is accountable under limited direction to perform and achieve complex work relating to training and handling of canines for Defence operations within an integrated workforce.
They are accountable to have a good understanding of and compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements.
An APS 4 Dog Handler will be accountable for organising their workflow, making decisions within their defined parameters relating to area of responsibility and will seek guidance when required.
They may exercise some discretion with respect to how legislation, procedures and guidelines are interpreted and applied to their work.
They will provide specialist or administrative support that is informed and directed by their knowledge of the animal handling environment.
They may undertake some research and analysis activities.
The APS 4 Dog Handler will be required to share information, monitor work practices, set work priorities and develop local procedures.
They will supervise and provide leadership to a team, providing coaching and on-the-job training for newer and less experienced team members.
The APS 4 Dog Handler may be required to communicate with, respond and provide advice to a range of stakeholders on complex operational and administrative issues to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes.
They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
**About our Team**
The APS Canine Supply team are responsible for the entire life cycle of canines born at RAAF Security and Fire School. Their role will include participating in development activities from birth until graduation.
The team work interactively with ADF trainers and are actively involved in MWD Basic Course Training activities.
The Team Leader will be required to work with large highly driven canines in bite work, tracking and detection training activities.
The Applicant must be physically fit and be able to maintain the ability to perform manual handling tasks and be evaluated yearly to maintain currency.
This position will have out of hours and weekend duties on a semi regular basis.
