The Role

This pivotal position focuses on Java development, aimed at enhancing the digital experience for Auto & General's clientele. You will be responsible for creating applications that empower customers to purchase and manage their insurance policies online, while also aiding in the development of internal tools that support our operational staff.

Your responsibilities will include designing and implementing highly available and reliable Java microservices deployed on AWS, which are crucial to our business. You will collaborate within a cross-functional agile team, supported by a product owner and Scrum master. All software is developed through agile methodologies and deployed via a modern DevOps/CI pipeline to AWS. This role also encompasses team leadership responsibilities, where you will work closely with developers and the Development Manager to ensure the successful delivery of significant projects. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement tailored solutions to meet sprint objectives and deliver value to business partners.
  • Utilize your expertise to guide solution designs and the development of our contemporary architecture.
  • Assist in the enhancement of our CI/CD pipeline and AWS deployment infrastructure.
  • Take ownership of the product and contribute innovative ideas for improvement.
  • Establish and uphold best practices in testing, including unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
  • Collaborate effectively within a cross-functional Agile team, contributing to development, deployment, and support as needed.
  • Inspire and lead fellow developers as a team leader.
  • Manage upward to the Development Manager and provide guidance to your team, ensuring necessary escalations are made.
  • Encourage engagement with planned and emerging work initiatives.
  • Perform other relevant activities as requested to meet operational needs.

Required Experience

Essential:

  • Extensive experience in building, deploying, maintaining, and supporting software applications.
  • Proficient in Java programming.
  • In-depth knowledge of Spring Boot and Spring Cloud Microservices frameworks.
  • Strong understanding and application of SQL and ORM technologies.
  • Experience with technical documentation, including high-level and low-level designs, UML diagrams, user guides, and system documentation.
  • Familiarity with application and system monitoring tools.
  • Experience with AWS Developer Tools and ecosystem, as well as Cloud deployment using Docker.
  • Ability to work with the Atlassian suite of products, including JIRA, Confluence, and Bitbucket.
  • Commitment to software application security standards.
  • Capability to mentor others and share knowledge for the benefit of the team.

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with GitLab DevOps Platform.
  • Experience in financial services applications is advantageous.
