The Role

This pivotal position involves Java development, focusing on enhancing the digital experience for Auto & General's clientele. You will be responsible for creating applications that facilitate online policy purchases and management, as well as developing internal tools that support our operational staff.

Your responsibilities will include crafting highly available and reliable Java microservices deployed on AWS, which are essential to our business. You will collaborate within one of several agile cross-functional teams, supported by a product owner and Scrum master. All software is delivered through agile methodologies and deployed via a modern DevOps/CI pipeline to AWS. This role also encompasses team leadership responsibilities, working closely with developers and the Development Manager to ensure the successful delivery of substantial projects. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement tailored solutions to meet sprint objectives and deliver value to our business partners.
  • Utilize your expertise to guide solution designs and the development of our contemporary architecture.
  • Assist in the enhancement of our CI/CD pipeline and AWS deployment framework.
  • Take ownership of the product and contribute innovative ideas for improvement.
  • Establish and uphold best practices in testing, including unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
  • Collaborate effectively within a cross-functional Agile team, contributing to development, deployment, and support tasks as necessary.
  • Inspire fellow developers in your capacity as a team leader.
  • Manage upwards to the Development Manager and provide guidance to your fellow developers, ensuring that escalations are addressed appropriately.
  • Foster engagement with planned and emerging work initiatives.
  • Perform other relevant activities as requested to meet operational needs.

Required Experience

Essential:

  • Extensive experience in building, deploying, maintaining, and supporting software applications.
  • Proficient knowledge of Java.
  • Expertise in Spring Boot and Spring Cloud Microservices frameworks.
  • Strong understanding and application of SQL and ORM technologies.
  • Experience with technical documentation, including high-level and low-level designs, UML diagrams, user guides, and system documentation.
  • Familiarity with application and system monitoring tools.
  • Experience with AWS Developer Tools and cloud deployment using Docker.
  • Proficient in the Atlassian suite of products, including JIRA, Confluence, and Bitbucket.
  • Promote best practices in software application security standards.
  • Ability to mentor others and share knowledge for the benefit of the team.

Preferred:

  • Experience with GitLab DevOps Platform.
  • A background in financial services applications is advantageous.
