Aboriginal Investment NT is a corporate Commonwealth entity established under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (Northern Territory Land Rights Act) and designed in partnership with Aboriginal Territorians.

Our purpose is to work with Aboriginal Territorians to achieve economic, social and cultural impact through innovative approaches to investments, grant-funded initiatives and other financial assistance.

We have initial capital of $680 million, which will be deployed and invested under our 5-year Strategic Investment Plan.

Position Purpose

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is a statutory position, established under the Land Rights Act, responsible for leading all aspects of Aboriginal Investment NT's operations, including execution of the organisation's Strategic Investment Plan.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Strategic Leadership: Leading, inspiring and developing a diverse, high-performing team.
  2. Providing high-quality advice to the Board and its committees.
  3. Executing Aboriginal Investment NT's Strategic Investment Plan.
  4. Ensuring the continuous improvement of Aboriginal Investment NT's grants and investments programs, including service user experience.
  5. Ensuring Aboriginal Investment NT meets its operational and performance targets and delivers on its strategic objectives over the long term.
  6. Overseeing Aboriginal Investment NT's financial structure to ensure it is financially sustainable and funding is available to facilitate achievement of its short and long-term goals.
  7. Working with the Board to develop the organisation's future vision, strategy and operating model.
Relationships and Influence

Building effective relationships with Aboriginal Land Councils, organisations and communities.

Fostering broad stakeholder relationships and operating effectively with Government and commercial partners.

Providing effective public representation for Aboriginal Investment NT including:

  • Raising its standing and public profile.
  • Attending ministerial meetings, senate committees and other public accountability mechanisms.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders in industry, government, and Aboriginal communities across the NT.
  • Leading commercial negotiations such as mergers, acquisitions or joint ventures.
Governance and Compliance

Maintaining an appropriate system of risk-management and internal controls.

Ensuring corporate governance requirements are met, including compliance with all applicable legislation, rules, policies and standards.

Driving a culture of good governance and providing accountability and transparency to Aboriginal people in the NT, and other stakeholders including business partners, customers, beneficial payment recipients, Parliament, government bodies, and the public.

Selection Criteria

Demonstrated cultural capability including a respect for diversity and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Understanding of the social, cultural, political and economic operating environment in the NT.

Extensive senior leadership experience including the ability to direct business operations and a solid track record of:

  • Working effectively with a diverse Board.
  • Leading an organisation through start-up or transformational change.
  • Leading the development and implementation of organisational strategic plans.
  • Identifying, seizing and commercialising opportunities.
  • Community development or capability building.

Demonstrated experience with governance and management of investment funds and/or grants management processes and systems.

Demonstrated stakeholder engagement and communication skills including the ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders in industry, government, media and Aboriginal communities across the NT.

Ability to interpret the legislative and policy frameworks relevant to the NTAIC and Corporate Commonwealth Entities more broadly, including the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 and the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013.

Understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal people in the NT, and the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal people.

Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field.
