Senior Safety Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Safety Advisor to join our team at the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG). As a key member of our Safety Operations team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health and safety of our researchers and staff.
As a Safety Advisor, you will be responsible for providing professional and complex safety advice and assistance to S&T stakeholders and management across a broad range of hazards and risks. You will contribute to the implementation and continuous improvement of the DSTG Safety Management System (SMS), particularly in areas with plant, hazardous chemicals, workshops, and laboratories.
You will also be responsible for proactively identifying hazards related to complex and bespoke plant and equipment, leading and participating in safety investigations, and communicating proactively with senior leaders and S&T colleagues.
Key Responsibilities- Deliver professional and complex safety advice and assistance to S&T stakeholders and management
- Contribute to the implementation and continuous improvement of the DSTG Safety Management System (SMS)
- Proactively identify hazards related to complex and bespoke plant and equipment
- Lead and participate in safety investigations
- Communicate proactively with senior leaders and S&T colleagues
- A team player with a willingness to share learning and support peers
- Passionate about plant safety
- Previous experience in a research, unique high-risk environment, or government agency
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge and previous experience in the implementation of a Safety Management System
- Sound judgement, intelligence, and common sense
- Ability to manage tasks and achieve results
- Strong stakeholder management and engagement skills
- Negotiate confidently and commit to action
- Completion of or working towards a formal WHS qualification with the minimum standard being a Certificate IV in WHS, with specialisations in plant safety, auditing, and training highly regarded
The Safety Operations team is responsible for supporting researchers to implement the SMS in a consistent way across their specific programs of work. We do this through partnering and being trusted advisors with networks to technical expertise and hazard specialists, to work in alignment with the SMS and enable safe research to achieve Defence priorities.
