Job Description

The Professional Support Specialist provides expert support to children, young people, foster and kinship carers, and families, primarily of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure seamless collaboration and communication.

Your primary responsibilities include:

  • Screening, intake, and placement processes for children and young people with foster and kinship care families.
  • Utilizing assessment, crisis, and short-term intervention skills; reporting issues to management.
  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and care arrangements to meet individual needs.
  • Delivering evidence-based parenting programs and collaborating with community agencies.
  • Coordinating recruitment and support for carers.
  • Generating assessment reports and facilitating foster care approval processes.
  • Managing case planning and supporting integration of joint case management; maintaining accurate records.
  • Providing direct in-home and flexible support services, including after-hours and on-call support; negotiating intervention plans and providing referrals.

Required Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • A degree in social work, psychology, social sciences, or related discipline, or equivalent experience (minimum Certificate III Community Services).
  • At least one year of experience working with children, young people, and families in child protection or community services.
  • Knowledge of child protection and out-of-home care frameworks, including relevant legislation.
  • Ability to complete assessments for care.
  • Experience working with First Nations people.
  • Understanding of child development and trauma theory.
  • A current driver's license – P2 minimum.
