About the role:

Merri-bek City Council is looking for a driven media and communications expert to join its team.

As a high-profile organisation with a range of media opportunities and challenges, we're seeking a go-getter with initiative to help protect and enhance Merri-bek's reputation.

You'll have regular direct contact with media to secure coverage and respond to enquiries, while leading some of Council's complex communications projects.

This is a fast-paced role with a different focus every day, working as a trusted partner on projects across the organisation


You would be working in a fun and supportive team of communications professionals working in partnership with the wider organisation to achieve great outcomes for our community.

Skills and experience require to perform the role:

  • Previous experience managing media responses in an issuesrich environment is required, with experience in government highly desirable
  • Experience in liaising directly with senior stakeholders and offering strategic media advice
  • Ability to communicate about complex projects and policies in simple language
  • Working independently to achieve positive media and communications outcomes in tight timeframes
  • Willing to participate in a weekly media oncall roster and work occasional overtime
The role will involve

  • Provide strategic communications and media support to the Strategic Communications Coordinator and senior stakeholders
  • Responding to media enquiries from local, metropolitan and national media within tight timeframes
  • Developing speaking points for the Mayor, Councillors and CEO to prepare them for media interviews
  • Identify and analyse critical and emerging issues, and opportunities for promotion
  • Deliver responsive, situationspecific communications actions for issues
  • Developing and executing communications strategies and plans
  • Preparing speeches for the Mayor and Councillors
