About the role:


We are seeking a strong communications leader, who has experience in people management, issues management, media management and overseeing complex communications projects.

This role will lead the Strategic Communications team and supervise 5 staff.


The Strategic Communications Coordinator will oversee the functions of media, internal communications, complex issues and communications projects, and support the communications program for the Mayor and Councillors.

Working in with the Unit Manager Communications, the role plays a critical role in protecting the reputation of Merri-bek and working with senior stakeholders to work through issues.


Skills and experience require to perform the role:

  • Tertiary qualifications in public relations, journalism or communications and /or extensive experience in public relations, marketing, journalism or communications.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering dynamic and engaging communication plans for complex projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing complex media issues and relationships, responding to media enquiries and proactively pitching media stories.
  • Demonstrated experience managing issues, crisis and emergency communications.
  • Highly developed stakeholder management skills and the ability to negotiate and influence stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Strong time management skills with ability to manage and respond to many requests and tasks within demanding timelines.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading a team of professional staff.
