Financial Controller – Construction Focused

We're now looking for a Financial Controller to join our Sydney team and help guide our financial direction during an exciting phase of growth.
About the role
Reporting to the Managing Director, you'll collaborate closely with the executive team to lead financial strategy, ensure compliance and drive commercial performance. You'll coordinate both local and offshore finance functions and support project teams with clear, data-driven financial guidance.This role oversees a finance team of three local and five offshore team members, providing day-to-day leadership, guidance and coordination. It requires strong people management skills, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to align team efforts with business objectives in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
What You'll Bring to This Role
• Deep experience in the construction, fitout, or project-based sector, with a strong grasp of WIP, subcontractor management and the financial rhythms of project delivery.
• A talent for connecting numbers to strategy and translating financial data into clear, actionable insights for project teams and senior leaders.
• Strong knowledge of Australian compliance requirements, including BAS, GST, payroll tax and AASB standards.
• The ability to zoom out for strategic forecasting and zoom in on margin analysis and project-level detail.
• Proven experience working with offshore finance teams and driving alignment across time zones and business functions.
What You'll Be Responsible For
• Leading financial strategy, planning, and internal controls to support growth and sustainability.
• Providing commercial insights and partnering with the MD and executive team on key decisions.
• Overseeing financial reporting, compliance, and regulatory obligations (AASB, BAS, GST, payroll tax).
• Managing cash flow, capital planning, and project profitability, including WIP and margin analysis.
• Driving process improvements, automation, and system efficiency using tools like Excel, MYOB, and
• Coordinating a finance team of 3 locally and 5 offshore, ensuring alignment and performance.
• Coaching business leaders in financial literacy and promoting a high-performance, accountable culture.
About you
• 7+ years' experience in senior finance roles, with proven success in the construction or fitout industry (essential).
• CA/CPA or equivalent qualified (or working towards it).
• Highly proficient in Excel; experience with MYOB and a plus.
• Clear communicator, able to influence and educate non-financial stakeholders.
• Commercially minded with a proactive, solutions-oriented approach.
• Experienced in working with offshore teams and cross-functional collaboration.
