Primary objective

The Director Teacher Registration Board leads the administration of the teacher registration scheme under the Teacher Registration Act.

The Director is responsible for ensuring the statutory functions and powers of the Teacher Registration Board are operationalised

effectively and with best-practice governance.

Context statement

The Teacher Registration Board is established under the Teacher Registration Act (NT) as an independent statutory board which regulates

the teacher registration scheme in the Northern Territory. While the Board maintains independence with regulatory decision-making, the

Director leads a supporting office in line with government priorities, policy and systems.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide strategic direction and leadership to a large multi-disciplinary team, ensuring the Teacher Registration Board can effectively

fulfil their statutory requirements under the Teacher Registration Act (NT).

2. Provide high level strategic advice and executive leadership to key stakeholders on matters pertaining to the regulation of the

profession in the Northern Territory and nationally.

3. Ensure the provision of appropriate services to the Board to facilitate the registration of teaching professionals, professional conduct

matters, certification of highly accomplished and lead teachers and the accreditation of initial teacher education programs in line with

national program standards and procedures.

  1. Provide strategic, timely and accurate reporting on performance and achievement of regulating outcomes to the Board and the

Minister, while maintaining operational and fiscal performance accountability in line with government priorities to the Department of

Education and Training.

  1. Lead policy and system development to contemporise practices in regulation and governance, including time sensitive action required

in response to law reviews and amendments.

  1. Provide executive leadership and management of staff, resource strategies and technological solutions with a view to continuous

improvement.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated executive-level leadership of an education organisation, with a proven ability to drive cross-government and community

support for key priorities.

2. Extensive experience and highly developed abilities in strategic planning, leadership and decision making in a complex and politically

sensitive organisational environment.

3. Proven ability to build effective relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders, bringing communication, interpersonal, negotiation

and collaborative skills together with the ability to accurately analyse and clearly communicate complex issues.

4. Demonstrated ability to lead staff through change including commitment to quality improvement and innovation to achieve

organisational goals.

  1. Demonstrated ability to manage resources and remain within budget whilst maintaining competing demands.
  2. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.

Desirable

1. Degree in a relevant discipline.

2. Previous experience within a regulation sector.
