Primary objective
The Assistant Director, Career Pathways leads a team responsible for designing and implementing initiatives that retain a high-
quality education workforce. The role ensures employees are well supported when starting new roles and are provided with
opportunities to grow as experts in their chosen fields.
Context statement
Career Pathways sits within the Career Development unit of the School Leadership, Culture and Care (SLCC) team. The unit drives
strategic workforce initiatives that build staff capability and professional growth across the NT education system. SLCC is
committed to cultural responsiveness, supporting inclusion and valuing diverse perspectives.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead the design and delivery of practical, innovative approaches that lift staff performance and engagement and help build a
positive workplace culture.
2. Guide the creation and uptake of tailored, evidence-based resources and processes that meet the needs of different staffing
groups.
3. Embed the views and needs of internal and external stakeholders when developing and evaluating system-level performance
and engagement initiatives.
4. Lead, mentor and coach the team and build a supportive, collaborative working environment within Career Development.
5. Provide high-level advice on onboarding and professional growth for teachers and principals, ensuring approaches are practical
and reflect different school contexts.
6. Use system knowledge and school improvement priorities to shape workforce initiatives that align to contemporary professional
learning needs.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to influence others and achieve results through teamwork.
2. Strong understanding of onboarding and professional growth strategies, including teacher and principal development pathways.
3. Ability to analyse local, national, and international education issues and their implications for workforce and leadership
development, with clear understanding of school contexts.
4. Ability to adapt in a changing environment and design innovative workforce initiatives that meet the professional development
needs of teachers and school leaders.
5. Strong project and program management skills, with a record of delivering quality outcomes on time.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages for different audiences.
7. Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, with the ability to work sensitively and effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualification in education and ability to register with the Northern Territory Teacher Registration Board.
2. Qualification relevant to human resources, educational leadership or project management.
