Primary objective
To effectively and efficiently administer the Petroleum (Environment) Regulations 2016, including ensuring compliance with Environment
Management Plans.
Context statement
The Environmental Regulation Division is responsible for striking a balance between protecting the Territory's environment and enabling
development. The Division ensures compliance with the Territory's environmental laws by applying best practice regulatory principles
across the regulatory spectrum, from assessment through to compliance and enforcement. We commit to being proportionate,
accountable, consistent, targeted and transparent in providing our regulatory service.
The Petroleum Regulation Unit is responsible for administering the Petroleum (Environment) Regulations 2016 (the Regulations) including
undertaking risk-based assessment of potential environmental impacts of onshore petroleum activities to inform decisions of Environment
Management Plans (EMPs) and overseeing environmental monitoring and compliance of onshore petroleum activities, including inspecting,
auditing and enforcement functions.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Identify and assess risks and potential environmental impacts and make recommendations on environment management plans in line
with the Division's policies and procedures and regulatory principles.
- Assist in the implementation of risk based regulatory activities related to environmental compliance under the Petroleum (Environment)
Regulations 2016 and environmental provisions under the Petroleum Act 1984.
- Participate in audits and field inspections to assist in compliance checks against the provisions of environmental legislative and
regulatory requirements for the onshore petroleum industry.
4. Provide advice to the NT EPA, government, industry and the public on environmental regulation of onshore gas exploration and
production.
5. Assist in the preparation of a range of supporting documentation including environmental guidelines, code of practice, procedures and
fact sheets relating to environmental assessment and regulation.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Tertiary qualifications in environmental science, natural resource management or equivalent discipline from a recognised academic
institution.
2. Experience in and understanding of environmental management (e.g. assessing environmental impacts, natural resources management,
risk/hazard management, compliance and enforcement, or environmental auditing).
3. Ability to interpret legislation.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate and negotiate with others including providing advice
to key stakeholders about environmental matters.
5. Ability to analyse, interpret and synthesise complex information into documentation for a range of audiences.
6. Demonstrated problem solving skills, including the use of initiative and the ability to work collaboratively.
7. Demonstrated experience managing competing workloads to deliver the required outputs with short turnaround times.
Desirable
1. Certificate IV in Government (Investigations) or similar.
2. Holder of a driver's licence and capacity to work outside of normal work hours, including regional and remote travel.
Further information
