Primary objective

Working with the Regional Ecosystem and Landscape Mapping (REALM) multidisciplinary team, lead the development of the

landscape and soil component of the Regional Ecosystem and Landscape Mapping program across the Northern Territory.

Context statement

The Flora and Fauna; and Land Resources Divisions are jointly developing REALM across the Northern Territory. The mapping will

integrate vegetation, soil and landscape information into a landscape and ecosystem map that will underpin a wide range of

economic, environmental and land use planning benefits for the Northern Territory.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Effectively lead a team that maps and describes the landscapes and soils of the Northern Territory.

  1. Work collaboratively with the REALM scientific team to deliver innovative soil, landscape and ecological mapping and

information.

3. In a safe environment, lead field teams and survey for the collection of soil and landscape data, ensuring adherence to Northern

Territory and Australian guidelines.

  1. Collate and analyse field data for the purpose of generating landscape and ecosystem geospatial map and information products

and publish in a timely manner.

5. Provide supervision, mentoring and on the job training for early career staff as required.

6. Be the senior point of reference for regional ecosystem and landscape information within the Northern Territory Government.

7. Communicate written and verbal soil landscape advice to government agencies, industry groups, land managers and land use

planners to assist sustainable development and land management.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. A relevant scientific degree qualification or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution.

  1. Extensive experience leading soil and land resource assessment programs and effectively deliver project outputs within

timeframes and budgets to achieve organisational objectives.

3. Demonstrated knowledge and use of national guidelines and classification systems for soil and land resource assessment.

4. Demonstrated experience using geographic information systems and remote sensing data in land resource assessment and

mapping.

  1. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team including working in remote field environments.
  2. Demonstrated experience in leading preparation of reports and related information for a range of audiences.
  3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally with a range of scientific and non-scientific clients,

especially people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

8. Current manual NT Driver's Licence or equivalent and demonstrated experience in operating a four-wheel drive in off-road

conditions.

Desirable

1. Knowledge of the soil and land resources of northern Australia.
