Primary objective

Assist in the assessment and management of historical and maritime heritage. Assess the potential impacts of development

on cultural heritage, including Aboriginal archaeological places, and assist in the management of the Heritage Register,

archaeological database and Underwater Cultural Heritage Database.

Context statement

The Heritage Branch is responsible for providing high level expert advice to the Department, Minister, Heritage Council,

stakeholders and the general public on heritage matters. The Branch provides secretariat services to the Heritage Council

which is a statutory authority. The Branch administers the Heritage Act 2011 and the Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018,

financial assistance programs, conducts original research and fieldwork and conducts investigation and compliance activities.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Assist in the assessment and management of historical and maritime heritage.

  1. Assess development proposals and provide advice to internal and external stakeholders on the potential impacts on

places protected under the NT Heritage Act 2011 and Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018.

3. Assess Heritage Impact Statements, Cultural Heritage Management Plans, and archaeological survey reports.

4. Work with the Heritage Branch team to manage both the Heritage Register, archaeological database and Underwater

Cultural Heritage Database.

5. Undertake research on behalf of the Heritage Branch and support the Heritage Council. Evaluate the completion of

heritage mitigation measures by developers and provide advice to the Director.

6. Provide advice and assistance to the Director as required, including the development of strategies, policies and processes.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Tertiary qualification in archaeology, cultural heritage, environmental management, or another related field.

2. Experience in the field of heritage management, or environmental assessment, or transferable experience.

3. Experience with Geographic Information Systems and site registers.

4. Good written and oral communication skills and the analytical skills to review complex projects.

5. Demonstrated ability to use initiative and work without detailed supervision.

6. High level organisational skills with capacity to balance competing priorities and meet deadlines.

7. Current NT Driver's License or ability to obtain.

Desirable

1. A knowledge of the NT Heritage Act 2011, and heritage management in the Northern Territory.

2. A knowledge of environmental assessment processes in the Northern Territory.

3. A knowledge of the Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018
