About The Role
An exciting opportunity awaits for an experienced Head of Operations to drive the day-to-day functions of a pioneering deep-tech startup. The Head of Operations will shape and execute the company's operational strategy and support the executive leadership in scaling the business. This role is ideal for a dynamic leader who is passionate about building robust operational systems and thrives in fast-paced team.
What will you be doing?
- Develop and execute the operational strategy aligned with company objectives and Australian market requirements
- Lead strategic planning processes and translate corporate strategy into actionable operational plans
- Monitor and report on operational performance metrics and KPIs to the Chief Operating Officer
Financial Management & Budgeting
- Oversee project budgets, ensuring optimal allocation of resources and cost management
- Collaborate with the finance team on End of Financial Year (EOFY) processes, including budget planning, financial reporting, and compliance requirements
- Manage operational P&L responsibility and drive cost optimization initiatives
- Work with CFO to develop and monitor departmental budgets and forecasting models
Team Leadership & Human Resources
- Lead, mentor, and develop the operations team to achieve high performance and engagement
- Design and execute hiring strategy, including workforce planning, talent acquisition, and succession planning
- Implement performance management systems and professional development programs
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence
Legal & Compliance Management
- Partner with the legal team on contract negotiations, vendor agreements, and partnership deals
- Ensure compliance with Australian regulatory requirements and industry standards
- Oversee risk management processes and maintain appropriate governance frameworks
- Manage relationships with external legal counsel and regulatory bodies
Process & Technology Optimization
- Work with Managed Service Provider (MSP)
- Implement and optimize business processes, systems, and workflows
- Manage technology infrastructure and vendor relationships
- Ensure data security and privacy compliance across all operations
- Manage workplace health and safety programs
What You'll Need
Education & Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Finance, or related field (MBA preferred)
- 8-12 years of progressive operations, strategy, or general management experience
- Minimum 3-5 years in senior leadership roles with direct P&L responsibility
- Technology industry experience, preferably with scaling organizations
Communication & Interpersonal Skills
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for executive reporting and stakeholder engagement
- Presentation and public speaking abilities for team communications
- Cross-cultural communication skills for working with global teams and diverse stakeholders
- Negotiation and relationship building capabilities with internal teams, clients, and vendors
Financial & Commercial Acumen
- P&L management experience with budget planning, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Understanding of Australian financial reporting standards and EOFY requirements
- Contract negotiation and commercial deal structuring experience
- Cost optimization and operational efficiency improvement track record
Leadership & Management Skills
- Proven track record of leading and scaling teams (typically 10+ direct and indirect reports)
- Strong people management capabilities including coaching, performance management, and talent development
- Change management expertise to drive organizational transformation and process improvements
