About The Role
An exciting opportunity awaits for an experienced Head of Operations to drive the day-to-day functions of a pioneering deep-tech startup. The Head of Operations will shape and execute the company's operational strategy and support the executive leadership in scaling the business. This role is ideal for a dynamic leader who is passionate about building robust operational systems and thrives in fast-paced team.

What will you be doing?

  • Develop and execute the operational strategy aligned with company objectives and Australian market requirements
  • Lead strategic planning processes and translate corporate strategy into actionable operational plans
  • Monitor and report on operational performance metrics and KPIs to the Chief Operating Officer

Financial Management & Budgeting

  • Oversee project budgets, ensuring optimal allocation of resources and cost management
  • Collaborate with the finance team on End of Financial Year (EOFY) processes, including budget planning, financial reporting, and compliance requirements
  • Manage operational P&L responsibility and drive cost optimization initiatives
  • Work with CFO to develop and monitor departmental budgets and forecasting models

Team Leadership & Human Resources

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the operations team to achieve high performance and engagement
  • Design and execute hiring strategy, including workforce planning, talent acquisition, and succession planning
  • Implement performance management systems and professional development programs
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence

Legal & Compliance Management

  • Partner with the legal team on contract negotiations, vendor agreements, and partnership deals
  • Ensure compliance with Australian regulatory requirements and industry standards
  • Oversee risk management processes and maintain appropriate governance frameworks
  • Manage relationships with external legal counsel and regulatory bodies

Process & Technology Optimization

  • Work with Managed Service Provider (MSP)
  • Implement and optimize business processes, systems, and workflows
  • Manage technology infrastructure and vendor relationships
  • Ensure data security and privacy compliance across all operations
  • Manage workplace health and safety programs

What You'll Need
Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Finance, or related field (MBA preferred)
  • 8-12 years of progressive operations, strategy, or general management experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years in senior leadership roles with direct P&L responsibility
  • Technology industry experience, preferably with scaling organizations

Communication & Interpersonal Skills

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for executive reporting and stakeholder engagement
  • Presentation and public speaking abilities for team communications
  • Cross-cultural communication skills for working with global teams and diverse stakeholders
  • Negotiation and relationship building capabilities with internal teams, clients, and vendors

Financial & Commercial Acumen

  • P&L management experience with budget planning, forecasting, and variance analysis
  • Understanding of Australian financial reporting standards and EOFY requirements
  • Contract negotiation and commercial deal structuring experience
  • Cost optimization and operational efficiency improvement track record

Leadership & Management Skills

  • Proven track record of leading and scaling teams (typically 10+ direct and indirect reports)
  • Strong people management capabilities including coaching, performance management, and talent development
  • Change management expertise to drive organizational transformation and process improvements
