The Department of Corrections is made up of correctional and community officers and professional managerial and administrative staff, who work together to keep the community safe and reduce re-offending. The Department supports safer communities by helping to break the cycle of crime and reduce reoffending by providing custodial service for prisoners within secure facilities and supervision for community-based adult offenders to ensure compliance with court and Parole Board Orders.

Following a recent alignment of portfolios, the Deputy Commissioner is inviting applications for two key Assistant Commissioners roles within Corrections: Custodial Operations and Operational Reform.

Applicants will be assessed against both positions and offers of employment will be made based on experience, qualifications and ability to perform the functions of the role. Applicants may express a preference for a specific position if desired.

Assistant Commissioners provide strategic leadership and direction, working closely with the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner in the delivery of correctional services whilst also supporting the future development of effective operations. Assistant Commissioners drive reform, including cultural reform, and are expected to lead by example and model departmental values.

Assistant Commissioner – Custodial Operations (ACCO – ECO3)

As the ACCO, you will provide leadership across Darwin, Alice Springs, Berrimah correctional centres, work camps, territory wide operations and growth projects, focusing on upholding community safety through secure custody, offender supervision, and rehabilitation, fostering a culture rooted in mutual respect and stakeholder engagement. Collaborating closely with senior leadership, you will direct service delivery, support operational enhancements, and champion reform efforts and cultural change initiatives. Your primary aim will be to uphold community safety through secure custody, offender supervision, and rehabilitation, fostering a culture rooted in mutual respect and stakeholder engagement.

Assistant Commissioner – Operational Reform (ACOR – ECO2)

In your role as the ACOR, you will incorporate Operational Reform and Commissioning, and Industry Skills and Employment, into a single, integrated function, to address urgent government priorities requiring the rapid commissioning of new infrastructure and services. Your purview encompasses physical facilities as well as systems related to security, staffing, programs and facility management, including complex and resource-intensive tasks.

Each of the above roles require extensive leadership experience in correctional or comparable environments, a proven track record of driving organisational change and operational innovation, and the skills necessary to manage complex projects, develop strategic plans and lead diverse teams and resources. High-level decision-making skills with the ability to navigate a complex, sensitive environment where choices impact community safety, operational reform, offender rehabilitation, and organisational reputation is essential.
