About the Business Unit
The Office of the Public Advocate (OPA) is an independent statutory office accountable to the Victorian Parliament which has been established to protect the rights of, and enhance the position of, people with disability in Victoria. OPA is a human rights organisation that promotes the diversity and inclusion of all people. OPA's vision is of a just and inclusive society that values and respects people from all walks of life and ages. OPA promotes a workplace culture where disability, and diversity of gender identities, sexualities, faiths, ethnicities, and abilities are respected. OPA values a range of experience in its employees, including professional, volunteer and lived experience.
About the RoleThe Healthy Discussions Coordinator will lead the delivery of the second stage of OPA's Healthy Discussions project. The project aims to contribute to improved communication between health professionals and people with disability. It also aims to contribute to health professionals having improved understanding of disability.
The project uses a supported decision-making lens. It promotes the message that people should be provided with practicable and appropriate support to be able to make decisions about their health if they need support. It highlights that there are small but effective ways that health professionals and health services can provide this support and make reasonable adjustments to ensure that people with disability are at the centre of decisions about their own health.
**Some of your duties may include**:
- Work closely with the Inclusion Projects Manager to lead engagement with key stakeholders, including from the health sector and universities delivering health-related courses.
- Supervise, support and mentor the Healthy Discussions Project Officer in developing and delivering presentations on lived experiences of acquired brain injury and inclusion, and in conducting a series of audio interviews on the theme of human rights that challenge assumptions made about people with disability.
About You
- Specialist knowledge and understanding of policy issues relevant to people with disability and the project, including supported decision making.
- Ability to draw on lived experience of disability to understand the experiences of, and barriers faced by, people with disability (particularly people with cognitive disability).
- Experience in delivering projects using a co-design approach, including effective engagement with stakeholders.
