**The Role**
Research Operations (RO) branch of Operations Enablement (OE) is looking for an APS6 Research Safety Advisor who is accountable under broad direction to undertake Work Health and Safety (WHS) support, with some specialisation in Emergency Management.

Working as part of a team you will, use your knowledge and experience to support the Site Leader in ensuring an appropriate level of emergency preparedness and response is maintained in line with Defence requirements.

In order to be successful in this role you will need to:

- Work effectively as part of the Research Safety Team to provide broad WHS support and guidance for research staff. This will include promoting a positive learning culture of safety within the research environment;
- Build strong relationships with internally appointed safety and research staff, including Facility Managers and Research Safety Officers (RSOs);
- Act as the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) Emergency Control Lead for the Edinburgh Site;
- Provide specialist feedback on safety incident investigations, preferably with an understanding of root cause methodology.
- Manage the development, implementation, monitoring and performance reporting of Emergency Management activities at the DSTG Edinburgh site;
- Assist to implement Emergency Management Plans and relevant Emergency Response Procedures in line with legislative and Defence requirements;
- Assist with site specific emergency training, induction and awareness requirements;
- Consult, cooperate and coordinate with key internal and external stakeholder in relation to WHS and Emergency Management, including via committee meetings;
- Contribute to safety management system review in a complex and diverse research Group.
- Represent DSTG Edinburgh and ensure positive engagements with internal and external emergency stakeholders i.e. Base Manager, Senior Australian Defence Force Officer, Estate planning staff and emergency services;
- Assess activities and processes for compliance with WHS legislation, policies and procedures relevant to Defence;
- Collect, analyse and interpret emergency, event and data to provide emergency and work health and safety advice.
- Resolve problems using professional expertise, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action and implications for work health and safety activities.

**About our Team**
RO is responsible for operational business process reform and performance management of Enabling Research Services in DSTG, with governance over delivery of Research Safety, Research Security and Integrity, Research Infrastructure, Research Resource Management and specialised Research Administration/Operations.

RO ensures efficient and sustainable Enabling Research Services to support DSTG and work with the Defence shared service providers to ensure continuity of service.

OE has a workforce of engineers, technicians, computer scientists and other professional staff who deliver a wide range of highly specialised research services and innovative solutions which underpin the operational capability of DSTG. OE’s work areas undertake a broad, on demand and dynamic array of functions to keep DSTG at the forefront of research and development.

OE’s work areas include:

- Scientific computing and DSTG’s eResearch strategy;
- Development and acquisition of a world-class secure High Performance Computing (HPC) capability for advanced modelling and simulation;
- Nationally recognised and unique research engineering capabilities;
- Specialised research safety, resource management and security services to assure sovereign S&T capabilities for Defence; and,
- Development and implementation of DSTG’s research infrastructure strategy.

To be successful in this role you will have and be able to demonstrate;
- Experience in the achieving sustainable change in complex workplaces is highly desirable;
- Experience in WHS roles is highly desirable;
- Experience in emergency management leadership is desirable;
