Position Overview - Underwriter, Financial Lines

Location: Sydney, NSW

This role is governed by the Central Bank of Ireland's Fitness and Probity standards.

XL CATLIN is seeking a seasoned Underwriter to become a part of our International Financial Lines division, concentrating on our suite of Management Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance offerings.

Your primary responsibility will be to provide a profitable underwriting service to our clientele. Key responsibilities include:

Core Responsibilities:
  • Evaluating intricate submissions, which encompass applications, policy documents, loss histories, and financial statements, while conducting thorough research to assess the risk level for each account and ensure alignment with XL CATLIN's underwriting guidelines.
  • Determining suitable risk premiums and establishing appropriate policy terms and conditions based on established underwriting tools, regulations, and protocols.
  • Proactively engaging with brokers and clients regarding insurance and risk management issues to guarantee their needs are met and expectations fulfilled.
  • Managing relationships effectively to create opportunities for cross-selling additional products and ensuring client retention.
  • Monitoring underwriting and financial performance metrics for your portfolio to contribute positively to the profitability of the business unit.
  • Assisting in the business reporting, planning, and forecasting activities.
  • Maintaining an awareness of all reported claims while providing input on claims settlements as necessary.
  • Collaborating within a team environment, supporting underwriters, underwriting assistants, claims personnel, and management.

You will report directly to the assigned Underwriting Manager.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A Bachelor's Degree is preferred along with demonstrated underwriting experience in relevant business sectors.
  • Ability to perform tasks according to established protocols while exercising discretion.
  • Capability to use judgment in identifying and resolving everyday issues in straightforward scenarios.
  • Marketing acumen - Effectively strategize for sales and business development, utilizing various techniques and tools to foster profitable growth over a specified timeframe.
  • Negotiation Skills - Structure and conduct negotiations with brokers and clients to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • Analytical Proficiency – Ability to visualize, gather information, articulate, analyze, and resolve complex issues to inform key business decisions.
  • Interpersonal Skills – Cultivate strong relationships with brokers, clients, and colleagues to enhance personal reputation and visibility within XL CATLIN and the broader market.
  • Strategic Planning - Make informed underwriting decisions that align with the business's strategic objectives and deliver results. Understand financial targets and levers to achieve departmental goals.
  • Industry Insight - Possess a comprehensive understanding of the insurance sector and specific product lines to enhance the underwriting process through improved technical and functional knowledge.
