About the Role

The Australian Government's Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Safety Advisor to join its Safety Operations team. As a key member of the team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health and safety of Defence scientists and engineers working on cutting-edge research projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert safety advice and guidance to researchers and scientists on complex safety issues related to plant, hazardous chemicals, workshops, and laboratories.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the DSTG Safety Management System (SMS), ensuring it is aligned with current Defence practice and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead and participate in safety investigations, including the delivery of lessons learned and recommendations for improvement.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and mitigate hazards, and develop strategies to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Communicate effectively with senior leaders and colleagues to ensure safety issues are addressed and safety outcomes are achieved.

Requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in a field such as occupational health and safety, engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in a safety role, preferably in a research or high-risk environment.
  • Strong knowledge of safety management systems, including the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and training programs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to think critically and solve complex problems, with a strong focus on safety outcomes.

About the Team

The Safety Operations team is responsible for supporting researchers to implement the SMS in a consistent way across their specific programs of work. We work collaboratively with technical experts and hazard specialists to ensure safety is integrated into all aspects of Defence research.
