We are seeking an experienced legal practitioner to join our team as a Principal Legal Officer at the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

This is a challenging opportunity for a skilled lawyer who is passionate about industrial relations and employment law. As a key member of our team, you will provide strategic advice on workplace law matters and lead complex negotiations with stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7 years' experience as a legal practitioner specializing in employment/industrial relations law within commercial or government environments. They will be admitted as a legal practitioner in the High Court or Supreme Court of a State or Territory and have a strong understanding of property law, commercial law, or insurance (desirable but not essential).

The salary range for this position is estimated to be between $140,000 and $180,000 per annum, depending on location and experience. This is a full-time role based in our corporate office, however we also offer flexible work arrangements including part-time options and job share opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist legal advice on workplace and industrial law, including employment contracts, industrial instrument interpretation, IR disputes, litigation, grievances, disciplinary matters, workplace health and safety, and workers' compensation claims.
  • Offer strategic advice to internal and external stakeholders, guiding effective negotiation and communication regarding legal rights and obligations.
  • Lead sensitive and complex negotiations.
  • Represent the NHVR in conciliation conferences and other court listings, as required.
  • Draft, review, and present detailed reports, briefing notes, and submissions in line with NHVR standards.
About You
  • A minimum of 7 years' experience as a legal practitioner specializing in employment/IR law within commercial or government environments.
  • Admission as a legal practitioner in the High Court or Supreme Court of a State or Territory.
  • Experience in property law, commercial law, or insurance (desirable but not essential).
