Job Description

Our organization seeks a highly skilled Mining Occupational Health and Safety Superintendent to join our Open Pit Mining team. This individual will play a crucial role in establishing, reviewing, and implementing occupational health and safety processes and standards in accordance with legislative requirements and corporate guidelines.

The successful candidate must have extensive experience in developing, planning, and implementing high standards of work health and safety policies in either an owner mining or contract mining environment.

This role requires collaboration with the Mining Training Superintendent to ensure consistent standards and processes are developed and adopted.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support mining operations by reviewing, developing, implementing, and training OHS systems, procedures, and processes in collaboration with the Open Pit Mining team.
  • Implement and monitor the mining safety management systems to ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Oversee contractor compliance with safety standards and systems.
  • Drive continuous improvement in safety performance through proactive engagement with site leaders.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and subsidiary OHS personnel, OHS authorities, training providers, and suppliers.
  • Collaborate closely with the Kiaka and subsidiary OHS and Training team to align standards and systems.
  • Support the development and delivery of site and role-specific OHS induction programs.
  • Establish fit-for-purpose systems for incident reporting, investigations, and follow-up actions.
  • Maintain the department's risk register and facilitate regular risk assessments.
  • Lead and participate in ICAM investigations for open pit mining and other areas as required.
  • Conduct quality reviews of risk assessments to ensure effectiveness and compliance.
  • Perform regular workplace inspections and audits to monitor safety standards.
  • Prepare OHS performance reports, including key metrics, trends, and improvement opportunities.
  • Promote and mentor a strong safety-first culture across the team.
Required Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will be an OHS professional with recent and relevant open pit mining industry experience and the following skills, experience, and qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualifications in OHS or related disciplines.
  • 5+ years' experience working in open pit mining in a senior OHS or leadership roles (owner mining or contract mining environment).
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of developing mining OHS systems and processes aligned with legislative requirements.
  • Working knowledge of mining operations in West Africa / Burkina Faso.
  • Strong knowledge of safety management systems, auditing, and incident reporting and investigation, ICAM Lead preferred.
  • High level of personal organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, be customer-focused with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Enthusiastic, hands-on approach.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office and OHS management reporting software.
  • Bilingual English / French (highly regarded).
