About the Role

The Australia Institute is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Strategic Communications Director to lead our media and communications efforts. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy that showcases our research and advocacy work to the public, media, and policymakers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and Implement Communications Strategy: Create and execute a communications plan that highlights our research and advocacy work, and positions The Australia Institute as a thought leader in public policy.
  • Lead Media and Communications Team: Manage and mentor a team of communications professionals to ensure effective media engagement, content creation, and distribution.
  • Build Media Relationships: Foster strong relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to secure media coverage and promote our work.
  • Content Creation and Distribution: Develop and disseminate compelling written and digital content, including press releases, op-eds, social media posts, and website content.
  • Monitor and Evaluate Communications Efforts: Track and analyze the impact of our communications efforts, and make data-driven decisions to optimize our strategy.
Requirements
  • Proven Experience in Communications and Media: A minimum of 5 years of experience in communications, media, or public relations, with a strong track record of developing and implementing successful communications strategies.
  • Leadership and Management Skills: Proven ability to lead and manage a team of communications professionals, with a focus on mentoring, coaching, and developing talent.
  • Strong Media and Communications Skills: Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling content for various audiences and channels.
  • Strategic Thinking and Problem-Solving: Ability to think critically and strategically, with a focus on solving complex communications challenges and achieving business objectives.
