Materials Research Scientist: DRI Production and Electric Smelting

Swinburne University of Technology is partnering with CSIRO to offer four PhD scholarships in Materials Science. The successful applicants will collaborate closely with Swinburne researchers, CSIRO, and relevant industry partners throughout their PhD studies.
Project OverviewThe scholarships are available for research projects focusing on Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production and electric smelting. The projects aim to investigate the thermodynamics and kinetics of DRI production using high-phosphorus, silica, and alumina-rich iron ores from the Pilbara region in Australia.
Research Objectives- To establish phases evolution, reaction mechanism, and kinetic model for DRI production.
- To develop a comprehensive understanding of the complex interactions of gangue minerals during the reduction process.
The research will involve both experimental and modelling studies, including systematic critical literature review, thermodynamic modelling, experimental study, and materials characterization techniques.
About YouTo be successful in this role, you will have:
- Bachelor of Engineering (4 years); Bachelor of Applied Science (4 years); or Masters degree.
- Background in Process/Extractive Metallurgy, Chemical/Environmental Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
- English Language Requirement (e.g. IELTS: Overall 6.5, No individual band below 6.0).
- Proficient interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work within a diverse team.
