Homeless Support Specialist

We seek a compassionate and skilled Homeless Support Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our support staff, you will work directly with clients to identify their problems, needs and risks.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and conducting individual counselling sessions using active listening and conflict resolution techniques
  • Providing basic life skills building in problem areas and assisting with intake procedures and programs to help residents succeed in their goals
  • Advocating for residents, resolving difficult or sensitive issues, responding to medical emergencies including overdoses, and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for a marginalized population

The Homeless Support Specialist participates in the set-up of shelter upon arrival and clean up before end of shift. They distribute harm reduction supplies, personal hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies, meals, etc. to residents.

The successful candidate will develop and implement short-term, issue specific intervention plans within program guidelines by one-on-one support, in consultation with the Site Supervisor and/or with any outside agencies, such as ACT teams, detox and treatment programs.

Gathering information relevant to the client's problems, needs and risks is essential for this role. This includes interviewing, observing behavior, meeting with other service providers, and using various inventories, checklists, and questionnaires.

As a Homeless Support Specialist, you will evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention plan, report on clients' progress, and discuss related concerns with the Supervisor in order to resolve identified problems and move towards defined objectives.
