About The Role

We are seeking a permanent full-time Strategic Design Lead, within our Customer Experience (CX) team of Information Technology, based at our THQ, in Blackburn, VIC.

The role exists to lead The Salvation Army’s Design Thinking capability and practice for the Customer Experience function within Information Technology.

Exercising all aspects of Design Thinking, the role takes a human-centred mentality to leading collaborative design and innovation initiatives that aim to improve the lives of the communities we serve.

The role will partner to establish the Army’s design methodologies, practices, processes, and patterns, and work collaboratively across the movement to identify and articulate a backlog of genuine problems to solve and employ this toolkit to produce strong community outcomes.

About You

Roles & Responsibilities:

- Exercise all aspects of Design Thinking, including interviewing, persona development, requirements gathering, empathy mapping, ideation, narrative development, storyboarding, prototyping, testing and feedback loops
- Lead the execution of design and innovation projects by inspiring and guiding cross-functional teams through the research, design, and experience process, facilitating and leading collaborative planning sessions, and presentations
- Identify gaps and opportunities in the Army’s service and product offerings and support development of a clear roadmap for enhancements and expansions through customer journey, competitor, and external environment analysis

- Conceptualize new ideas by exploring solutions based on the latest communications and technology trends with focus on emerging digital capabilities, other innovations and potential internal and external platform alliances or partnerships
- Lead post-implementation reviews to identify areas of success and improvement opportunities and create a feedback loop for incorporating lessons learned into future projects
- Drive deeper understanding of what good digital experience is and use data-driven methods to enhance the digital engagement of the communities the Salvos serve - clients, donors, volunteers, and personnel.

What you need to be successful:

- Degree from a reputable institution with at least 8 years of relevant experience; experience in both technical and business areas or experience in championing and managing innovation related projects is an advantage
- Substantial knowledge of design thinking and human-centered design. Formalised design-thinking certification and practice is an advantage
- Experience in product, process, and experience development using design thinking methodologies
- Be a highly skilled group facilitator with experience leading multi-disciplinary groups through such activities as empathy and journey mapping, ideation, and requirements gathering/definition
- Ability to work alongside people experiencing disadvantage and injustice effectively and respectfully, prioritising their experience as paramount with zero harm
- Executive-level presentation skills: must have persuasive presence and ability to effectively communicate technology to business people and business to technology people
- Must be able to influence others without direct reporting relationships and navigate complex relationship scenarios
- Experience in prototyping/design tools or user testing methodologies is highly desirable
- Excellent verbal and written skills
