About NBMLHD

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) is a recognised leader in the healthcare industry, providing a range of public health services to the Nepean, Blue Mountains, and Lithgow Region. The Nepean Mental Health Centre provides inpatient care for people experiencing acute mental health issues, including the short-stay Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre (PECC), the Acute Mental Health Unit, Mental Health High Dependency Unit, and Older Persons Mental Health Unit. We support patients by linking them to case managers for ongoing treatment and support.

We are seeking a dedicated and culturally grounded Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer to play a pivotal role in supporting Aboriginal individuals and families navigating mental health services. This position is integral to ensuring care is delivered in a respectful, culturally safe, and responsive manner. Working across hospital and community settings, the Liaison Officer will serve as a vital bridge between consumers, families, and health service providers, facilitating access to appropriate services, advocating for culturally informed care, and fostering trust and understanding throughout the mental health journey.

In this role, the Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer will contribute to planning and coordination of admissions, treatment pathways, case management, referrals, discharge processes, and follow-up care. This is more than a clinical liaison role; it is a chance to make a meaningful impact, empower communities, and shape the future of culturally competent mental health care.

What You Will Bring To The Role
  • Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent (pursuant to Section 14(d) of the Anti-discrimination Act).
  • Hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the relevant area of care. Or, be willing to undertake a minimum Certificate III Aboriginal Primary Health Care (including recognition of prior learning against current qualifications).
  • A demonstrated knowledge of the Aboriginal concept of social and emotional wellbeing including an understanding of Aboriginal family structure and Aboriginal culture and wisdom. This will include understanding practical and emotional issues that may arise when working with Aboriginal individuals with mental health concerns and their families.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the social, psychological and financial implications of hospitalisation for Aboriginal consumers.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles and application of child protection guidelines within NSW Health.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and as a member of a multidisciplinary team, with the ability to plan and prioritise own workload.
  • Possess effective written and verbal communication skills, and basic computer skills.
  • Current NSW driver license (P2) acceptable) and willingness to drive for work purposes.

Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified and must not exceed the duration or conditions associated with the current visa.
