About NBMLHD

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) is a leading public health provider serving the Nepean, Blue Mountains, and Lithgow Regions. The Nepean Mental Health Centre provides inpatient care across several units and supports patients with case management for ongoing treatment and recovery.

Role purpose

We are seeking a dedicated and culturally grounded Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison Officer to support Aboriginal individuals and families navigating mental health services. The Liaison Officer will work across hospital and community settings to bridge consumers, families, and health service providers, advocate for culturally informed care, and foster trust and understanding throughout the mental health journey. This role contributes to admissions planning, treatment pathways, case management, referrals, discharge processes, and follow-up care.

Responsibilities
  • Support planning and coordination of admissions, treatment pathways, and discharge planning.
  • Coordinate referrals and follow-up care in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Advocate for culturally safe and responsive mental health care for Aboriginal consumers and families.
  • Engage with consumers and families to facilitate access to appropriate services and supports.
  • Work across hospital and community settings to provide ongoing liaison and support.
What you will bring
  • Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent (pursuant to Section 14 (d) of the Anti-discrimination Act).
  • Hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a relevant health qualification; or be willing to undertake a minimum Certificate III Aboriginal Primary Health Care program (including recognition of prior learning).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Aboriginal concept of social and emotional wellbeing, including understanding of Aboriginal family structure and culture.
  • Understanding of the social, psychological, and financial implications of hospitalisation for Aboriginal consumers.
  • Understanding of child protection guidelines within NSW Health.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team; prioritise own workload.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and basic computer skills.
  • Current NSW driver license (P2) and willingness to drive for work purposes.
