About the role

  • The New Families Program currently have a vacancy for casual Family Support Worker to join our New Families team located in Nudgee. This position is a Permanent Parttime role offering 40 hours per fortnight. The 40 hours will be made up 5 x 8 hours shifts across a 24hour period Monday to Sunday including midnight to 8am shifts.
  • We are seeking a passionate and caring Family Support Worker to support mothers to develop appropriate parenting and living skills that enable them to gain confidence in caring for their babies. You will build and maintain relationships with mothers, role model expected behaviours and support personal skill development. The role will be responsible for contributing to the provision of a safe and supportive environment for vulnerable mothers and their babies in the Mercy Community Intensive Support House where mothers and their babies reside for up to three months to complete a parenting assessment. These mothers are involved in the statutory child protection system.
  • This position offers a competitive hourly rate of $34.04 to $35.77 plus superannuation (dependent on qualifications and experience). You can also increase your takehome pay by salary sacrificing and other benefits available within our Enterprise Agreement.

To be eligible for this position you will require:

  • Hold a Certificate III (or higher) in Community Services or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the issues affecting clients of the program, including intergenerational trauma, domestic and family violence, mental health, homelessness, childhood sexual abuse and substance misuse.
  • Understanding of or ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of infant and child development, attachment and bonding and safe parenting practices in line with those recommended by the World Health Organisation and Breast-Feeding Association.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to produce clear, accurate and concise written case notes and reports, meeting preset timeframes.
  • The ability to work unsupervised with vulnerable mothers and babies, providing guidance, supervision and support.
  • You must hold a current Provisional Green (P2) or Open Driver's License. You will also hold or be willing to obtain a Working with Children Check (Blue Card) and Police Check along with and any other legislatively required personal history screening as required.
  • Evidence of current vaccination against Whooping Cough or willingness to obtain prior to commencement.
