Within NSW DPI, Agriculture ) leads agricultural industry development through extension, science and research, industry policy and regulatory compliance functions to foster sustainable and economic agricultural industries.

About the role


The Technical Officer Plan Bee provides technical support to the Project Leader in the conduct of field and lab experiments and the management of data for the National Honey Bee Genetic Improvement Program (Plan Bee) and external beekeepers.


Key accountabilities of the role include:

  • Organising and conducting field and lab trials including hive management, data and sample collection, and results preparation
  • Accurately recording and managing research data and information
  • Operating research equipment including microscopes, Ezyloader hive lifters, honey extraction plant, weighing systems and research equipment
  • Developing online course materials
  • Operating within relevant work health and safety (WHS) and quality management systems (QMS)

About you
To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant experience in the use of Microsoft programs including Word and Excel
  • Experience in relevant learning management systems and Canvas
  • Beekeeping experience and competence in working with honey bees and experience conducting research trials
  • Ability to communicate with industry partners about project requirements and project results
  • Qualifications in accordance with Part 2(xvii) of the Crown Employees (Department of Trade and Investment) Technical Staff Award
  • Current drivers licence. Medium rigid truck licence and forklift licence preferred.
  • Must not be allergic to honey bee stings
  • Ability to undertake frequent field work in varying climatic conditions at remote sites including lifting 25kg boxes of honey
