Join a dedicated Governance and Integrity team committed to enhancing governance practices, improving decision-making, and maintaining public trust. The department manages key functions such as Freedom of Information (FOI), privacy, public transparency, and adherence to various legislative requirements.

Role Overview: We are seeking an experienced Senior Governance Officer to oversee and manage FOI and privacy functions of a local council. This role involves providing high-level advice on privacy and data protection, handling FOI requests, and supporting the implementation of governance frameworks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • FOI Management: Act as the primary decision-maker for FOI applications, ensure compliance with the Freedom of Information Act 1982, and manage the development of the FOI Part II Statement. Provide training to staff and support councillors in their FOI responsibilities.
  • Privacy & Data Protection: Develop and review privacy policies, embed a Privacy By Design approach, handle privacy complaints and enquiries, liaise with privacy regulators, and conduct privacy audits.
  • Public Transparency: Implement and maintain the Council’s Public Transparency Policy, manage public registers, and support the proactive release of information.
  • Support Governance Framework: Provide advice and support to the Governance and Integrity Department, assist with the implementation of governance frameworks, and contribute to the preparation for elections and caretaker periods.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a privacy officer and FOI decision maker.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014, Freedom of Information Act 1982, and related legislation.
  • Proven experience managing end-to-end FOI applications and privacy enquiries.
  • Strong skills in policy development, risk management, and legislative compliance.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with senior leadership and the public.

Qualifications:

  • Relevant experience and practical knowledge in interpreting and applying legislation.
  • Demonstrated experience developing privacy management programs.
  • Current Victorian Driver’s License.
