Who we are looking for

DPS is seeking professionals in workplace relations, performance, or conduct to lead a small team and provide expert advice.

There are current and expected vacancies at the Assistant Director level within the team. Our ideal candidates will have experience in one or more of the team's responsible HR areas: workplace relations, performance, or conduct. Tertiary qualification in human resource management or law is desirable but not required.

Job Specific Requirements


• The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance.

Duty Statement

Section: Legal and Conduct

Immediate supervisor:  Director, Workplace Relations, Performance and Conduct

Under limited/general direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for the Parliamentary Executive Level 1 classification. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assistant Director, Workplace Relations

Provide high quality specialist advice to senior management, and technical advice and education to staff on a broad range of employment issues, complex workplace relations matters, relevant legislation, and agreements. Identify, design, and develop innovative strategies to improve departmental outcomes when managing complex sensitive people matters, staff engagement, and workplace consultation. Represent the department in dealings with unions, tribunals, external jurisdictions, and other stakeholders to avoid disputes or achieve positive outcomes and resolutions. Assist and support the research, development, management, and implementation of enterprise agreements, HR Policies, and employment contracts, ensuring compliance with relevant laws, processes, and better practice. Lead, motivate, and gain the commitment of others in achieving a workplace relations focus responsive to contemporary issues and changes in workplace practices. Develop and maintain productive stakeholder relationships, liaise and effectively negotiate with key stakeholders including senior management, staff, industrial organisations, and external agencies. Prepare written material including executive briefs and corporate documentation for review by senior staff in a fast-paced environment.

Assistant Director, Performance and Conduct

Represent the department in dealings with unions, tribunals, external jurisdictions, and other stakeholders to avoid disputes or achieve positive outcomes and resolutions. Assist and support the research, development, management, and implementation of HR Policies and employment contracts, ensuring compliance with relevant laws, processes, and better practice. Lead, motivate, and gain the commitment of others in achieving a positive performance and conduct focus responsive to contemporary issues and changes in workplace practices. Develop and maintain productive stakeholder relationships, liaise and effectively negotiate with key stakeholders including senior management, staff, industrial organisations, and external agencies. Prepare written material including executive briefs, corporate documentation, findings of fact, and formal communications relating to employee conduct and performance for review by senior staff in a fast-paced environment. Conduct Code of Conduct investigations and make recommendations to delegates. Provide advice and guidance to staff and managers on complex integrity and misconduct issues. Provide expert advice to managers and staff on performance management and underperformance.
