
Urban Wildlife Officer

These positions form part of a small team based out of various Urban Reserve Depots and are tasked to deliver the Parks and Conservation Service Urban Wildlife Program. PCS attends more than 2000 kangaroo collisions each year across the ACT.
This position will often work autonomously to attend to injured or sick wildlife across the ACT. Most callouts are to euthanise kangaroos injured in vehicle collisions and remove deceased animals from roadsides/public land.
The occupant will be trained and mentored in dealing with injured/sick and problematic wildlife in accordance with relevant codes of practice and legislation. This will include training and mentoring on euthanising wildlife.
To achieve the outcomes required by this position the occupant must:
- Have excellent customer service skills and an ability to communicate with members of the public, often in difficult circumstances
- Have good problem-solving capabilities, specifically relating to managing sick or injured wildlife in a range of situations and in accordance with the _Animal Welfare Act 1992_
- Have the ability to utilise Information Technology to capture program related data and information
- Actively maintain physical and psychological wellbeing in order to safely undertake the duties of the role
- Demonstrate safe driving and manual handling skills
- Be willing to predominately work outside, under hot and cold conditions, and in steep and rough terrain
- Be able to work after hours shifts when required.
The occupant is also likely to undertake general maintenance and construction duties relating to management within the PCS estate. This may include:
- Maintenance of walking tracks, fencing and recreational facilities
- Cleaning and maintenance of amenities
- Minor maintenance of plant, signs, equipment, firebreaks, buildings and vehicles.
The occupant may also be called upon to:
- Assist in situations where stock handling is required and as part of biosecurity responses
- Perform other duties as directed by Senior Managers.
**Eligibility/other requirements**:
- Eligible to obtain/retain an ACT Firearms Licence.
- Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the _Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011_ is required. For further information on Working with Vulnerable People registration refer to - Working with vulnerable people (WWVP) registration (act.gov.au)
- Hold a current manual driver's licence.
**Note**:This process will be used to fill one permanent position and one short term temporary position.
An order of merit will be established from this selection process and may be used to fill future identical vacancies over the next 12 months.
