Reporting to: DIPS (Development, Innovation & Performance of Services) Location: Melbourne, Australia
Our Ambition
We are building the future of Project Controls and PMO in Australia. As part of our global DIPS organisation, the Business Unit Technical Leader (BUTL) ensures we deliver excellence, innovation, and impact across our engagements. This is a pivotal leadership role, blending technical anchorage, delivery support, and community development to raise the bar in how projects are delivered and how value is captured.
A Two-Step Journey
We see this role as a progressive mandate:
Step 1 – Immediate Priorities (First ~9 Months): Lead our PM Practice Our current PM Practice Lead has recently moved on, and we need someone to step in and take ownership of this critical capability. In this phase, you will:
- Deliver on strategic project management engagements with clients.
- Manage PM personnel and engagements, ensuring delivery excellence.
- Support pre-sales and recruitment for PM roles.
Step 2 – Broader Mandate: Full BUTL Scope Once the PM Practice is stabilised and on a growth trajectory, you will transition into the broader BUTL responsibilities, spanning:
- IP Development & Technical Anchorage
- Sales & Growth Support
- Delivery Excellence & Recovery
- Capability & Community Development
- Digital Transformation in PMO & Project Controls
- ROI & Benefits Capture
This evolution allows you to make an immediate impact while also shaping the long-term technical identity of M|P in Australia.
The Role & Responsibilities
Immediate (PM Practice Leadership):
- Deliver high-value PM engagements for strategic clients.
- Manage and mentor PM consultants, ensuring quality and client satisfaction.
- Contribute to PM-related recruitment and pre-sales activities.
Broader BUTL Role:
The BUTL is a technical leader, connector, and enabler. You will anchor our PMO and Project Controls expertise, ensure our teams deliver state-of-the-art solutions, and help shape how we define, improve, and scale our services in Australia.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish Technical Anchoring – Define and continuously refine M|P's PMO and Project Controls methodology in the Australian context.
- Enable Excellence – Foster state-of-the-art delivery through diagnostics, continuous improvement, and innovation initiatives.
- Support Sales & Bids – Contribute to pre-sales, solution engineering, and complex client requirements.
- Strengthen Delivery – Lead or support the set-up of strategic/complex engagements; provide recovery support when required.
- Recruit & Grow Talent – Support recruitment, evaluation, and development of consultants and delivery managers.
- Develop Communities – Animate the DM process and delivery manager community; nurture a culture of shared learning and collaboration.
- Drive Digital Adoption – Integrate digital PMO solutions into our services, working closely with the Digital PMO Lead.
- Capture Return on Experience – Quantify the ROI and benefits of our engagements, ensuring lessons learned are fed back into our practices.
- Represent & Inspire – Act as a technical reference point for clients and a role model for teams.
What You Bring
- Solid experience in PMO / Project Controls, ideally with exposure to both delivery and consulting environments.
- A track record in leading complex projects or recovery missions, with tangible improvements delivered.
- Strong skills in business partnering — able to engage with sales, clients, and delivery teams with credibility.
- Experience in recruitment, mentoring, and capability building for technical roles.
- Awareness of digital solutions in PMO and project controls, and curiosity to keep learning.
- Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with the ability to inspire both technical experts and client stakeholders.
Who You Are
- A technical anchor – someone who sets the standard, defines the reference, and ensures our teams deliver to it.
- A continuous improver – always looking for risks, gaps, and opportunities to raise value.
- A bridge-builder – comfortable moving between sales, delivery, and innovation.
- A community leader – passionate about growing people and creating collective expertise.
- A strategic doer – equally skilled at defining direction and rolling up your sleeves when delivery is on the line.
By joining now, you'll have the chance to lead a practice immediately and then grow into a strategic technical leadership role with regional and global influence.
