The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated individual to lead the Vehicle Safety and Standards section within the Driver and Vehicle Services directorate.

This Level 7 leadership role is pivotal in shaping and overseeing the implementation of policies and guidelines that ensure vehicle safety across Western Australia. You will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Vehicle Safety and Standards Section, providing expert guidance and endorsing technical and policy decisions where regulatory clarity may be lacking. The role also involves ensuring compliance with both state and national legislation, including the Australian Design Rules and the National Code of Practice for Light and Heavy Vehicles.

In addition, you will provide high-level advice to senior leadership and industry stakeholders, particularly in relation to non-standard vehicles. You will manage human, financial, and technological resources to deliver efficient and effective services aligned with DTMI priorities. The role includes developing and implementing governance frameworks, business processes, and risk management strategies to support safe and compliant vehicle operations. You will foster a culture of collaboration, respect, and innovation, empowering your team to deliver impactful outcomes for the community. This is a dynamic and influential role that offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the safety and standards of vehicles across the state, while driving continuous improvement and innovation in service delivery.

The position involves being part of national vehicle certification standards and may be required to attend intra-state travel at the departments expense.

Currently this is a 6-month fixed term contract with the possibility of extension or permanency.

About you

  • Significant experience in the automotive industry, with strong technical knowledge of vehicle standards and design testing.
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply both state and national vehicle legislation such as but not limited to the Australian Design Rules and to develop policy frameworks.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
