This is an opportunity for a candidate with a background in law who is keen to develop their career in complex determinations of fact and law and regulatory decision making. The role will support the drafting and issuing of decisions by experienced solicitors who consider referrals and submissions and make determinations under the various Acts.

About the role
This position is in the Disciplinary Action Unit, which is responsible for the disciplinary process in relation to Licence Holders within the Building Industry. The Disciplinary Action Unit is responsible for making determinations about complex matters of fact and law and the appropriate disciplinary action in relation to licence holders, including whether to:
Impose monetary penalties up to $220,000,
Implement drafted licence conditions, for example imposing restrictions or requiring remediation of misconduct or governance failures and ensuring quality improvements; and/or
Whether to suspend or cancel building licences of both small and large licenced entities in NSW, including building design professionals, builders, trades, supervisors and certifiers
The Disciplinary Officer assists delegates in exercising executive decision-making functions similar to a member of the NSW Civil and Administrative Decisions Tribunal in its administrative and equal opportunity jurisdiction.
This role will suit a law student near the end of their degree or law graduate with experience, who have an interest in regulatory law and practice, and who demonstrate strong skills in statutory analysis and disputes, and an ability to quickly develop skills in drafting complex documents.
In this role, you will:
- Assist in the drafting factual backgrounds and setting out grounds of decision documents, based on analysis of evidence in the context of statutory frameworks;
- Undertake legal research and other paralegal/administrative type duties;
- Proofread complex legal documents, including Notices to Show Cause and Disciplinary Decisions;
- Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders including investigators, inspectors, mediators and legal officers, as well as external stakeholders, including lawyers, traders and consumers;
- Update public registers, issue documents to licence holders and assist business operations through administrative tasks.
To be successful in this role:
- You will possess legal qualifications, or be close to achieving legal qualifications or have other extensive experience in regulatory decision-making support;
- You must have strong analytical written communication skills;
- You must have superior interpersonal and written communication skills and the ability to express complex issues in a concise and logical manner;
- You will possess high-level problem-solving skills; and
- You will possess a high-level of working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 products.
