Apunipima Cape York Health Council is a community controlled Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health service, which provides culturally appropriate, family centred, primary health care services to the communities and people of Cape York.

About the Opportunity

The Project Officer, Elder Care Support Program has the primary responsibility of working in collaboration with the Elder Care Support training team to build the capacity of the local workforce employed within our specified training region, for the purpose of supporting Elders and older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to understand the aged care system.

The Project Officer will work closely with the Training Coordinator to coordinate and organise workforce engagement activities, including non-accredited training; mentoring and support; and delivery of communications that align with the NACCHO communications framework, including Yarning Circles.

This is an outreach position, which requires extensive travel into remote and regional communities within the Far North and North Queensland region.

The position is full time, fixed term with an end date of 30 June 2026.

There is a genuine occupational requirement under Section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld), for this position to be filled by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. The position is therefore only open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants.

About You

We are seeking applicants who have:

  • Demonstrated experience working with elderly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Experience in facilitating small group meetings and/or workshops.
  • Understanding of the historical and contemporary issues that impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their communities, particularly in Cape York.
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in accordance with community protocols and customs.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, particularly in the Aged Care Sector.
  • Sound analytical and problem-solving skills to improve systems and apply training solutions to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust with stakeholders.
  • Sound understanding of, or willingness to learn about, the aged care system.
  • Ability to or willingness to learn how to enter data and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience working unsupervised and as part of a team.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Must be willing and have the ability to travel in remote and regional communities within North and Far North Queensland either by light aircraft or 4WD as required.

Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience including ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team), RAS (Regional Assessment Service), Centrelink, Service Providers and the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme).
  • Registered Training Organisation (RTO) experience in VET qualification system.
  • Current First Aid and CPR
  • Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid

Mandatory Requirements

  • Certificate IV or higher in a relevant health qualification i.e. Aged Care, Primary Health, Community Services.
  • High level of computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft office suite.
  • Current Queensland Drivers Licence.
  • Blue Card (Working with Children Card), positive notice or exemption, or willing and able to obtain prior to commencement.
  • Australian Federal Police Check, or willing and able to obtain prior to commencement.
