SCE is offering a rare and exciting opportunity for an experienced Operations Manager to take ownership of operations and manage the No.6 Blast Furnace Slag Handling Services at the Port Kembla Steelworks.
This is a critical role where you'll build and lead an operations team ensuring safe and environmentally compliant handling of slag, directly supporting uninterrupted Blast Furnace operations whilst maximising granulated blast furnace slag production (GBFS).
Joining SCE at an exciting growth phase, you'll report directly to the Divisional Manager and work closely with the 6BF Slag Handling Maintenance Manager, operating industry-leading equipment and building a team from the ground up.

About the Role
As the Operations Manager for 6BF Slag Handling Services at Port Kembla Steelworks, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and continuous handling of slag. You will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of slag operations—from liquid slag transfer, granulation, cooling pits and transport while maintaining strict adherence to safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build and lead a high-performing, skilled operations team working across a 24/7 roster
- Oversee the operation and maintenance of 6BF Slag Granulation Equipment to ensure reliable performance and maximise the production of GBFS
- Manage the safe and efficient transfer of liquid slag to the granulation plant or air-cooled slag pits
- Coordinate all activities related to slag cooling pits, including preparation, air and water cooling, excavation, and loading into haulage trucks
- Maintain and manage all infrastructure within the slag handling area, including roadways, truck wash facilities, spray systems, and ponds
- Ensure full compliance with process safety standards and environmental regulations
- Develop and execute operational strategies to maintain continuous support to blast furnace operations, with zero unplanned interruptions
- Provide strong leadership and development for site teams, promoting a culture of safety, accountability, and performance excellence
- Drive safety, compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives across all areas of responsibility
- Prepare and present clear, accurate reports and updates to key stakeholders on service performance and operational outcomes
About You
- Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Operations Management, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
- A strong background in operational and commercial management within industrial, mining, or heavy manufacturing environments
- A proven ability to build, lead, and inspire high-performing teams in 24/7 operational settings
- A safety-first mindset with a proactive, solutions-driven approach to managing risks and challenges
- Experience in managing infrastructure, mobile plant, and logistics across large sites
- Strong planning, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with a track record of delivering operational KPIs
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across all levels of the business
- A commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and operational excellence
