The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) is Australia's independent expert regulator for health and safety, structural integrity, well integrity and environmental management for all offshore energy operations and greenhouse gas storage activities in Commonwealth waters, and in coastal waters where regulatory powers and functions have been conferred.

NOPSEMA also administers the functions of the Offshore Infrastructure Regulator (OIR), for the offshore renewables industry. This includes the regulation of work health and safety, infrastructure integrity, and environmental management for offshore renewable energy infrastructure activities.

We are seeking an experienced
Freedom of Information Officer
to join the Legal and Governance Team in our Melbourne or Perth office. The position is initially being offered for a period of up to two years.

Role:

The Legal and Governance Directorate provides legal services and support to the Executive and business areas of NOPSEMA.

Reporting to the Executive Director/General Counsel – Legal and Governance Directorate, the Freedom of Information (FOI) Officer role will be responsible for managing the Freedom of Information function of NOPSEMA.

Key Responsibilities:

As a skilled FOI Officer, you will assess, process and draft decisions on complex and sensitive Freedom of Information requests made under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cth) (FOI Act).

You will act as the point of contact for FOI enquiries and will lead and deliver internal training with respect to the FOI Act.

As the FOI Officer, you will manage external legal service providers regarding reviews made to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

You will also manage internal and external reporting obligations in relation to Freedom of Information requests.

We would like to hear from you if:

You have demonstrated experience in managing complex and sensitive FOI requests, including making FOI decisions.

You have strong written and oral communication, negotiation and influencing skills, together with good organisation skills and the ability to communicate and collaborate and cultivate productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders whilst maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.

You hold appropriate relevant qualification and / or have demonstrated experience in a similar FOI role in government or other similar regulatory environment.
