About the Role
The Laboratory Technical Support – Team Leader (Science) works under the guidance of the Manager, Technical and Laboratory Support (Science), and is responsible for overseeing both physical resources and junior team members within the Science laboratories in the School of Science, Computing and Emerging Technologies (SoSCET) at Swinburne. This junior leadership role plays a key part in supporting high-quality teaching and research by helping to plan and carry out strategic initiatives in the labs. It involves working closely with various internal and external stakeholders to ensure efficient operations and alignment with Swinburne's broader goals.
The role requires strong communication and relationship-building skills, as it involves working collaboratively across different technical teams and business units under a 'One Swinburne' mindset. The Team Leader also provides expert advice on health and safety matters, manages junior technical staff on a daily basis, and supports research and teaching operations by helping with scheduling, updating compliance documents, and offering general lab support. A proactive, positive, can-do attitude and commitment to top-notch service delivery are essential to succeed in this position.
About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:
• You will bring a positive attitude and can-do mindset – we're looking for someone who uplifts the team and tackles challenges with enthusiasm.
• Extensive experience in laboratory operations and management in a teaching or research organisation.
• Demonstrated experience in a technical supervision role requiring the maintenance and use of complex technical equipment and/or techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, supervise, monitor and evaluate laboratory compliance activities.
• Ability to develop and assist with reviews and implementation of policies, procedures and systems; propose recommendations for action; implement solutions to improve safety in laboratories.
• Extensive experience in chemical management in relation to technical and laboratory operations, including an understanding of statutory requirements associated with chemical hazards.
• Proven experience in creating safety documentation such as Standard Operating Procedure, Safe Working Instructions and Risk Assessments for complex instrumentation and tasks.
• Demonstrated ability to solve problems including evolving work practices and continuous improvement.
• Well-developed ICT skills and familiarity with the use of propriety software for a wide range of laboratory equipment and systems.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills to facilitate the provision of advice and support required by both staff and students.
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask to meet client needs.
• Well-developed team skills, including the ability to foster and promote a team environment.
• Experience managing small teams or demonstrated ability to manage teams.
