Job: | Full-Time (Jan 2025 start) | Fixed-Term (June 2026) | Redfern, NSW
The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As part of the Children's Criminal Law Practice (Youth Koori Court), you'll advocate for justice for First Nations youth, appearing in the Youth Koori and Children's Courts to deliver high-quality, culturally grounded legal representation. You'll build strong community and stakeholder connections, guide and mentor colleagues, and contribute to meaningful, lasting change in the lives of young people. Each day, you will:
- Advocate in the Youth Koori Court and Children's Court, providing high-quality, culturally appropriate legal representation.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with stakeholders, including Aboriginal organisations, Youth Justice, and NSW police.
- Provide independent, balanced criminal law advice and resolve ethical issues as needed.
- Mentor and support solicitors and staff, contributing to professional development and effective team performance.
- Stay current on children's criminal law, legislation, and court procedures to maintain professional standards.
- Contribute to law reform, submissions, and represent ALS at meetings, conferences, and community engagements.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a dedicated and experienced legal professional who combines technical expertise with a genuine commitment to justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. You understand and respect the cultural, social, and historical contexts that shape the lives of First Nations people, and you use this insight to provide culturally appropriate, high-quality legal representation. You thrive in collaborative environments, mentor and support colleagues, and are driven to make a meaningful, positive impact. Key strengths include:
- Hold legal qualifications with a current NSW Practicing Certificate.
- Strong knowledge and experience in criminal law, particularly children's criminal law.
- Deliver high-quality, culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
- Manage diverse workloads independently, meeting deadlines and maintaining professional standards.
- Understand and respect the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal communities in service delivery.
- (Desirable) Minimum 2 years' experience in criminal law; willingness to travel across NSW as required.
Our Journey Together
At ALS, you'll find a career that truly matters, one where your work has purpose and impact every day. We are proud to offer a supportive and rewarding environment with a range of generous benefits, including:
- Not-for-profit salary packaging to reduce your tax burden, which means you get to keep more of your hard-earned money in your pocket
- Annual leave loading of 17.5%, ensuring that you are rewarded for your time off and can enjoy a well-deserved break.
- Career and professional development opportunities
