Founded in 1977 Hyundai Rotem Company (HRC), a member of Hyundai Motor Group (HMG), is among the global top 5 railway providers,
delivering critical national infrastructure in over 50 countries.
HRC has succeeded in developing high-speed trains and is now establishing our presence in the Australian market.
Currently, the Australian operation of HRC is working on two major projects:
- The New Intercity Fleet (NIF) Project - a joint venture between HRC, UGL and MEA, this project is delivering a fleet of new intercity trains for operation in the NSW electrified rail network. The fleet comprises of 55 Long Units and 70 Short Units for the Newcastle, Blue Mountains, South Coast and Central Coast Lines; and
- The Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) - a project commissioning, designing and constructing a new manufacturing facility in Torbanlea Qld and a new maintenance facility in Ormeau Qld. It includes manufacturing and delivering 65 EMU Train sets (390 cars) by the end of 2031.
Role Description
As In-House Counsel, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the Senior Project Counsel and working closely with the Commercial Director for the Asia-Pacific business unit. You will provide expert legal guidance across project risks, compliance, procurement, contracts, and claims, ensuring Hyundai Rotem's commercial interests are safeguarded in the region.
This is a hands-on, dynamic position where you'll be at the forefront of major rollingstock manufacturing projects, with significant interaction across engineers, project managers, procurement specialists, and external consultants.
Key Responsibilities
Provide high-quality legal advice and support on:
- Contract review and interpretation
- Negotiation and drafting of variations, amendments, and pre-contract agreements notices, claims, and disputes management
- Preparation and review of legal reports and presentations
- Support front-end project matters including tender responses, teaming agreements, and MoUs.
- Manage broader legal issues such as WHS, industrial relations, licensing, procurement, and consultant engagements.
- Lead and coordinate contract precedent development and compliance across the Asia-Pacific business unit.
- Work with external counsel and claim specialists on legal and risk matters.
Qualifications
- Admitted solicitor in New South Wales (or eligible to obtain practising certificate).
- Minimum 5 years' post-qualification experience in a top-tier law firm or in-house environment, with a strong focus on major projects, infrastructure, defence, or transport.
- Proven expertise in managing complex commercial contracts and disputes.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- A pragmatic, solutions-focused approach and the ability to work effectively with technical and commercial stakeholders.
