Port Melbourne Victoria, Australia Strait Link Full time

Highly accurate Payroll Officer needed to manage complex payroll cycles, support compliance and drive process improvement at Strait Link.

Shape the future of payroll at Strait Link

We're looking for a skilled
Payroll Officer
who thrives in complexity, cares about accuracy, and wants to be part of a fast-moving, high-performing finance team. If you love problem-solving, interpreting EBAs, improving processes, and owning your work end-to-end — you'll fit right in.

This role is hands-on, detail-driven, and central to ensuring our people are paid correctly and confidently. You'll also act as the key support to our Payroll Manager, taking a leading role in coordinating payroll cycles across our operations.

About the Company

Strait Link has a proud history as a vital link in the supply chain between Tasmania and the Australian mainland. As an end-to-end logistics provider, everyday our people - on our vessels, at ports, at our depots and warehouses, and in our trucks and offices - play a vital role connecting Tasmanian businesses and communities.

Through daily sea freight services between Port of Melbourne in Victoria and Port of Burnie in Tasmania, our world-class ships connect the Tasmanian economy and communities with customers, suppliers and markets across Australia and, in turn, the world.

About the Role

In this role, you'll manage the accurate and timely processing of
weekly, fortnightly, and monthly payrolls
, covering multiple EBAs and local agreements. You'll ensure legislative compliance, prepare key payroll-related reporting, and support taxation and superannuation submissions.

You'll partner closely with the Payroll Manager and the broader finance team, contributing to continuous improvement, reducing manual processes, and strengthening payroll controls and efficiency.

What You'll Be Doing

  • End-to-end processing of complex payroll cycles across multiple EBAs and awards.
  • Coordinating payroll activities with the Payroll Manager to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Managing PAYG, Payroll Tax, Superannuation, LSL, Workers Compensation and termination calculations.
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly and annual payroll functions alongside Finance.
  • Responding to payroll queries from employees and key stakeholders.
  • Producing accurate, timely and detailed reporting (ABS, GL reconciliation, discrepancies, etc.).
  • Identifying and recommending improvements to payroll systems and processes.
  • Supporting WHS objectives and contributing to an injury-free working environment.

About You

You're a
seasoned, hands-on payroll professional
who can balance detail, deadlines, and complexity with ease. You enjoy working autonomously but collaborate effectively across teams. You're proactive, organised, agile and solutions-focused — someone who can step up, guide others, and keep things moving when deadlines are tight.

You bring:

  • Strong experience processing complex payroll and interpreting multiple EBAs.
  • Experience with integrated HR/Payroll systems (Preceda/Dayforce exposure a bonus).
  • Excellent accuracy, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid knowledge of all payroll-related legislation and compliance.
  • A structured yet adaptable approach, and an eye for process improvement.
  • Strong people skills and the ability to build rapport at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of an experienced payroll team.

Ready to take the next step?

If you're motivated, detail-driven and want to contribute to a strong and supportive Finance team, we'd love to hear from you.
