Are you passionate about basketball and excited to make an impact in the community? Do you have love basketball and have a background in refereeing? The Rockingham Flames are looking for a Referee Coordinator to join our team and help us develop the next generation of referees within our community.
Basketball industry experience is required for this position.
Position Overview:
The Referee Coordinator is responsible for the management, development, and administration of referees across all competitions. This role ensures referees are appropriately trained, supported, and rostered to provide quality officiating, while fostering a positive and professional environment for referees, players, coaches, and spectators.
Key Responsibilities
Referee Management & Rostering
- Recruit, train, and retain referees for all association competitions.
- Prepare and distribute weekly referee rosters, ensuring fair allocations and appropriate skill matching.
- Manage referee attendance, replacements, and availability in a timely manner
- Ensure referees are punctual, presentable, and uphold the association's standards and expectations
Training & Development
- Facilitate referee education, workshops, and on-court coaching.
- Provide feedback, mentoring, and performance evaluations to referees.
- Support referees to progress through Basketball WA / Basketball Australia accreditation pathways.
- Develop and implement initiatives to encourage retention of referees, particularly youth referees.
Game Day Duties
- Act as the primary contact for referees during competitions.
- Support referees before, during, and after games, including resolving disputes and addressing issues as they arise.
- Promote a positive and respectful culture towards referees across players, coaches, and spectators.
Administration
- Manage referee payroll records and ensure payments are processed accurately.
- Maintain up-to-date records of referee accreditations and development.
- Provide reports and updates to management as required.
- Contribute to policies and procedures relating to referees and officiating.
Relationship Management
- Build positive relationships with referees, parents, coaches, and officials.
- Promote respect for referees through education and reinforcement of codes of conduct.
- Act as the liaison between referees, the association, and Basketball WA/Basketball Australia referee bodies.
Key Skills & Attributes
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to lead, mentor, and motivate referees of all ages.
- Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
- Knowledge of basketball rules, competition structures, and referee accreditation systems.
- Professional, calm, and approachable manner.
- Commitment to referee welfare and development.
Qualifications & Experience (Desirable)
- Basketball WA / Basketball Australia Referee Accreditation
- Experience in referee coaching, development, or administration.
- Previous refereeing experience at domestic or representative level.
- Experience managing staff/volunteers, rostering, or payroll.
- Working With Children Check (required).
- Experience using Refbook
Hours & Conditions
- Minimum of 15 hours per week (not including referee development on game night).
- Attendance at games
- Some flexibility in hours to meet competition demands.
- Mandatory availability for all evening games and weekend events is required.
