Primary objectives

Provide high quality administrative and secretarial support services to the Clerk and Chief Executive to

support the effective operation of the Legislative Assembly and its Committees and for the efficient

functioning of the Department.

Context statement

The Department of the Legislative Assembly (DLA) provides quality and timely support and advice for

the operation of the Assembly, its committees, Parliament House, and electorate offices and staff.

The Office of the Clerk provides advice to the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly

regarding administrative and procedural matters. It also provides executive leadership for the DLA.

Key responsibilities

1. Provide high level executive support to the Clerk and Chief Executive of the DLA including, but not

limited to, diary and travel management, record keeping and the payment of invoices.

2. Administer Parliament petitions, written questions and responses in accordance with Standing

Orders.

3. Assist the Clerk and Clerk Assistant in the production of daily scripts for the Parliament and work in

the Chamber as required.

4. Maintain the Register of Members' Interests and manage inspections of the register.

5. Provide secretariat support for the DLA, liaising with the Cabinet Office and other agencies as

required.

6. Provide secretariat support to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (NT Branch) and

Assembly Committee meetings.

7. Liaise with the Office of the Chief Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Leader of Government

Business, Members and electorate staff, Ministerial staff, Secretary to Executive Council, Office of

the Parliamentary Counsel, Office of the Speaker and other NT agencies as required.

  1. External (internet) and internal (intranet) websites management for the Office of the Clerk in liaison

with other responsible officers.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Extensive experience in providing executive level administrative, secretarial and office management

support to a senior executive.

2. Effective communication skills demonstrating political impartiality, confidentiality, discretion and tact

in dealing with Members, Electorate Officers, departmental employees and external stakeholders

including senior officials and dignitaries.

  1. Demonstrated excellent organisational skills and the ability to use initiative and to work with minimal

supervision under pressure to meet deadlines.

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of parliamentary systems and the operation of parliament and Inter-

    Parliamentary protocols, or ability to gain this knowledge.

Desirable

1. Tertiary qualification in a relevant field.

2. Knowledge of diplomatic protocols, courtesies and public relations.

Requirements for selection and undertaking the role

• Prior to being formally offered a position with the Department of the Legislative Assembly, applicants

  • The successful applicant will be subject to a criminal history check. A criminal history will not exclude

an applicant from this position unless it is a relevant criminal history.

  • Access to recreation leave will be restricted during Parliamentary sitting periods.
  • The position is based at Parliament House.
  • The position requires the incumbent to undertake remunerated overtime hours during peak times

such as Assembly sittings.

  • The right to disconnect – This position is not expected to be available for regular work-related contact

outside of normal work hours.
