The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation is seeking to appoint an experienced, self-motivated person to provide leadership and direction to a multidisciplinary team in conducting assessments, compliance activities and providing high level advice in relation to the department's responsibilities for the protection of koalas and koala habitat under the Planning Act 2016 and Nature Conservation (Koala) Conservation Plan 2019.The successful applicant will provide strategic direction and operational management to the Koala Assessment and Compliance team and its programs and high-level advice and support to the Director Southern Wildlife and Koala Operations. The position is responsible for ensuring regulatory assessment and compliance activities are undertaken in accordance with statutory requirements and other programs are delivered according to priorities, timelines, and targets. They will promote awareness and understanding of the legislative frameworks for the protection of koalas and koala habitat to the development industry, local councils, conservation groups and the community while enhancing knowledge of legislative obligations.
To achieve the outcomes required by the role, you must be able to: 1. Develop, implement, and continuously review frameworks and systems to support the provision of regulatory assessments, compliance activities and advice.2. Manage assessment and compliance activities in partnership with other DESI teams, state and local government authorities, key external stakeholders, and contractors to deliver regulatory and conservation outcomes.3. Provide specialist advice including policy support, program evaluations and interpretation of relevant legislation and guidelines including the Planning Act 2016, Nature Conservation Act 1992, and Environmental Offsets Act 2014 and related polices, practices and processes to advise senior management on matters relevant to the protection of koalas and koala habitat.4. Lead the Koala Assessment and Compliance team to ensure a strong, cohesive team approach and continuously support the development of assessment and compliance capacity within the team and across DESI.5. Manage team resources by monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on all activities to ensure they are undertaken to maximum effectiveness and within budget and support the development of the program budget including preparation of funding submissions, administration of grant payments, and revenue, budget monitoring and reporting.6. Prepare and present high level briefing notes, project plans, submissions, technical reports and correspondence including policy submissions, ministerial briefs and reports and provide input into the review of legislation, regulations, policies and operational frameworks and systems.7. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community, indigenous peoples, special interest groups, other government agencies and industries tounderpin the success of projects.8. Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
